"Unknown Treasures" Military Coats

Description

Eighteenth century style naval costume pieces from unknown productions. All four pieces are very well made. The first jacket described below appears to be from an older film (circa 1940s) while the other pieces appear to be from a relatively newer film (circa 1980s).  There are four (4) pieces total in the collection: three naval jackets and one tricorn hat.

Jacket #1: Navy blue plaid wool military style coat with cream lapels and nine gold buttons on each side on obverse, cuffs of each sleeve have three buttons, and faux flap pockets on each side have three gold buttons. Bottom edge of side seams have buttons that attach front and back of tail together the sides. Thin leather cord tie at obverse center of neckline. Interior is lined with cream silk fabric. Interior tag at top of neckline reads "UNITED COSTUMERS / HOLLYWOOD / NO. 666A / NAME CARY GRANT / CHEST SLEEVE 41 / WAIST / INSEAM 11”. Tag stapled to lining of proper right shoulder reads “MGM” on obverse and “15-18” on reverse”.

Jacket #2: Navy blue wool naval uniform coat with tails. Ten gold-toned buttons on each side of front center opening. Buttons are on a white wool background. Gold thread ribbon at collar, cuffs, pockets and outline of front center opening. Three buttons on each sleeve cuff and three buttons on each pocket. All buttons have an image of an anchor surrounded by rope.

Jacket #3: Blue cutaway tailcoat with gold ribbon trim, gold buttons with embossed images of anchors, and white lapels and cuffs. Pocket on each side of hip with gold trim and three gold buttons. Cuffs of sleeves are decorated with gold trim, black felt, and three gold buttons. Interior is lined with cream cotton fabric. Orange sticker attached to interior with handwritten text reading “42  10 / 1  5”.

Tricorn Hat: Black tricorn hat with gold ribbon trim around top edges and a gold ruffle ribbon medallion ornamentation on proper left side of brim. Angels tag on interior of top. Adjustable band around interior brim of hat. Handwritten text on interior of hat underneath adjustable band reads “Charles / CG”.

Condition

Jacket #1: Pinholes throughout lining. Button on proper left side has fallen off.

Jacket #2: White areas are yellowed throughout.  Button missing on proper left pocket.  Costume label missing from interior.  Pinholes throughout interior lining from prior display technique.

Jacket #3: Small pinholes throughout reverse from display. Shoulder seam on interior lining on proper right arm has torn from stitching. Interior tag on reverse has been removed. Slight yellowing around interior edges.

Tricorn Hat: Small spots of glue residue on proper left side near ornamentation. Dust residue on interior folds of tricorn. Stitching attaching obverse proper left side is loose. Dirt/makeup residue on interior band on obverse.
