An accessory to a costume can be just as important as a jacket, dress, shirt, or pair of pants. What would Jake and Elwood Blues be without their hats and sunglasses? Indiana Jones without his fedora? Davy Crockett without his coonskin hat? Charlie Chaplin without his cane? It's just not as iconic.
It's been almost 30 years, but "Judge Dredd" is still popular with many collectors. But the judge costumes without the accessories? They're leotards!
This month, the Planet Hollywood Vault is focusing on accessories. Much like a great rug, they really pull the costume together, man. When Brad Pitt played a western drifter in "Thelma & Louise" (1991), the cowboy hat, large belt buckle, and bandana did more to characterize him than the denim jacket and jeans. (His bandana is in our current auction.) While Richard Kiel was an imposing presence at 7'2", he wouldn't have been "Jaws" in two separate James Bond films if he didn't have those metal teeth!
You may notice we have quite a few pairs of glasses available this month. Glasses completely alter a character, and one can argue they are the most important accessory an actor can use in becoming their character. Don't believe me? Just look at Clark Kent. Characters such as Austin Powers, Harry Potter, Mrs. Doubtfire, Steve Urkel, and Leonard Hofstadter would be very different without their glasses. Does anyone remember Stefan Urquelle? How different was Jaleel White without the Urkel glasses? It's akin to Peter Parker becoming Spider-Man in, well, "Spider-Man" (2002).
We just want to remind everyone of the importance of accessories in Hollywood, and how a small addition to a costume can make a big difference!
